Updated w/ Pics! Time to Add HP Mods to My G - what do I do?
Okay, I'm not a gearhead like a lot of these guys on this forum, but I seek your wisdom since most of you seem to know what you're talking about Forgive me if you've already posted this information before.
I've just come across some extra cash and I specifically set aside $2K to $3k for my G. (Modest budget to start with, yes/no.) Anyway I want to focus on the PERFORMANCE of the car but still keep it's sublte = a sleeper if you will. I don't want them to see me coming until I fly by them.
a. What do you think I should start with?
b. What's the difference between a Z-tube and a CAI? (not a gearhead, sorry)
c.. If I change the exhaust would it be noticeable in aesthetics?
d. Anyone know of a good shop to go to in L.A. (I don't have a garage nor tools to install).
first you need to decide what you want to go with. simple parts like bolt ons or Force Induction. if you plan on making this a fast car u would go with a turbo or sc. if you want simple mods you can get headers, intake, exhaust, etc.
Not that there's anything wrong with it, but 4 to 500 hp is a little nuts, even for me. If I was going to do that, then I'd go balls out and drop it change the suspension, tires, etc etc so I could go to the track and race it. It's all good if you do that, but these are not my intentions.
A couple other items you may look into spacer/aftermarket plenum, unorthodox racing pulleys and high flow cats.
z-tube vs. CAI
z-tube is an OEM intake tube from a 350Z that has no airbox which increases air flow and for some, gas mileage. Costs less than a CAI as well (I got mine for $40 shipped)
CAI is an aftermarket intake that is situated differently in the engine compartment to get cooler air. The risk with this setup is that it is more prone to sucking up water and damaging your engine. Nismo makes one with a bypass valve that can mitigate that issue. Cost is higher than a ztube and starts around $200 depending on which brand you select.
That being said, if you are not going FI there is not much, if any, difference in performance between the two. Both setups will give you a more aggressive tone and most advice on which to choose in your situation centers around what sound you are going for.

Thanks J, I was really trying to figure what the difference was. Do you know if the CAI gets better gas mileage as well?

I do not know if the CAI gets better gas mileage. For that matter I've just heard about people getting mileage with the ztube but have not personally tracked it.
CAI seems to show it's advantage in FI setups. Unless you want one for show or some other reason, your best bet is the ztube as it costs significantly less (nismo w/ water bypass is $300+ and shipping is extra)
If I were you, I would look into a spacer or aftermarket plenum as it is probably the best bang for your buck mod.

With the new REVUP engine that they put into the 05 coupes, most of the bolt on mods such as the plenum that work for the 03-04 will be useless on the 05s. The 2005 VQ35DE is redesigned with variable exhaust timing, as well as cam timing. SO basically you are shit out of luck for the next year or so untill they develop some significant mods for the 05s. Hydrazine is currently working on a mod that they promise will be good on the 05s. Also since you have about 3k saved up. Save up some more, and bore out your engine... Pistons, rods, cams, springs, valvs, head, etc. That will give you lots of significant power, but it will all be very reliable. A stroker kit released by AEBS is $7800 dollars. But that will give your around 400hp. Since you siad you dont want power like that, my advice is to get an exhaust (although gains will be slight because of the new tech.) and a Z-tube (oem 350z intake tube.) that will help your car breath.
As soon as they come out for some parts for the 05s, look into cams, pistons, headers, springs, valves, etc....
!Hope that helps
