why does our tranny suck so bad? i hate the way it feels when you shift. its like you have to force it into gear. My 03 toyota corolla and my friends Scion TC shift so much smoother than our g35. this sucks.
oh yea, did i mention the crappy tranny
Wow alexn103! All I can say is you got a real lemon. Some of the stuff you're saying sounds like a description of one of my former 4th gen Corvettes. I can't call you out on what you are saying about your car because I can't prove it to be wrong, but just wait a little while and you will see the problems begin to arise on the Benz's and Beemers that your family members own. Just read up on Consumer Reports and just about every auto magazine and the facts are that quality is an issue with these makes from about '96 thru present. Lexus, Infiniti, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have been at the top of quality and reliabity surveys for years and years. OVERALL (not your little lemon) Infiniti has a stelar quality record.
The funny thing is I have the same problem as Alex. Also alot of other people have had similar problems. Looks like you got lucky Platinum.
Guess so, but I only have 20K miles on my '03 and I don't drive mine hard. No 1/4mi runs and the drag strip, etc. Some of you guys really run the devil out of your G's. Maybe the two of you treat your G's in a normal fashion, dunno, but how you drive a car is often times a direct function of how they hold up. My sunglasses are small too, due to my small head and brain, so the sunglasses holder works just fine

That is great for you, but how does the fact help all of us with the 03-04 cars and all the problems
I wasn't trying to be unsympathetic... I think it sux that it should take ANY car company 3 model years to get it right. But that's historically the way it goes. But the issues our G has had is very small compared with the new Fords, Chevy's and Chrystlers.
As far as the Tranny goes... yes, I think it's probably the most difficult clutch I've owned to date... but, I also seem to be improving my shifting ability as time goes by. It just takes a lot of practice to get the shifting to go smooth. (Some more than others )
Also, the comparisons people continue to make with BMW and Benz is really like comparing apples with oranges. Most of the German makes are priced at least $10K higher for a "Coparably equiped" vehicle. Also, they have been making these models for decades, and have continued to refine them over the years. I owned a 1987 320i, and it looked about as luxurious as a Ford Fiesta!
Be patient peeps, and if you can't be, trade in your 03/04 for the new 06... but please stop slamming a very nice car. If you don't like your G, find someone who will give it the love it deserves.

why does the interior look so plasticy? i never really noticed it before, but then when i compared my car to my dads new SLK, my sisters 325ci, and my moms 325i, i see the germans make it look so more luxurious.
what's up with the rough idle? why so shakey? feels like i'm in a 1986 300zx w/ 200,000 miles on it. it makes me worry about the life of the engine and if its gonna make it past 150,000 miles.
what does the whole car shake when you turn off the engine? i know stepping on the clutch will make the rumbling disappear, but it shouldn't have to be like that. It should shut off smoothly and quietly.
i have an 04 and the stupid sunglass thing can't even hold sunglasses.
oh yea, did i mention the crappy tranny
the tranny is a more "sport tuned" trans hence the more aggressive/ driver oriented feel
plasticy interior? i know you didn't just compare the 3 series interior to the G's.. that was the first thing that turned me off about the 3 series, is how cheap and plastic feeling the interior was when i was in the market for a new ride.. i thought my 93 civic had a less plastic feel to its inter.. i mean they didn't even try to make the plastic seem "not plastic" lol..
i don't know what this rough idle/ shakey thing your talkin about
the "shake" your refering to upon turning off the engine is prob due to firmer eng/tranny mounts..
3rd, American labor is not where the problems lay guys. Take the Toyota Camry for example - built in the States, and is well known as the best built and most reliable car in the country. Japanese parts put together by American hands. There are many such examples.
-- The reason you see so many crappy "American" labels is because of where they buy their parts from -- CHINA, Korea, Taiwan... you name it; to keep the costs down. But they just don't get it!! Americans are really WILLING to pay a little extra to get some quality!
American labor is great! Find the occasional thing completely manufactured in the States and you will see that it's very well made. The entire world comes to the states for the latest computer chips and military products (for example).
Don't dump on America fellas.. but feel free to dump on the dumbass CEO's of the Top 3 Automakers for continuing the Status Quo!
personally i don't see many probs with parts from Asian countries, its more of a hate related generalization thats just been born and bred and blown up throughout time.
2nd i beg to differ about American build quality.. Never would i dump on America, but lets face the facts..back in the day when there were only a hand full of foriegn auto manu's here on our homeland..build quality/ fit and finish on imports were hands down superior..
i'm not here to stir anything up, but sometimes the truth hurts!

I know .. I do love my G to death, but I am looking into trading it for an 06 model.. lake shore slate with all the new goodies

i don't have a lemon. my 04 has 18,000 miles on it and it runs fine. i don't question nissans reliability, because if that was an issue i would have not even considered this vehicle. nissan is a great company but has always been more into performance than reliability, and that's why toyota and honda holds more value in the long run. i was only exaggerating about the transmission. I don't have to literally force it into gear. It's just not a smooth transition from gear to gear, especially in the first few gears. the only problems my Benz and BMW could possibly encounter are electrical problems, at least in the short run. of course in the long run i doubt its reliability, but they will be traded up for new ones before they hit 70,000 miles anyway.
It's funny to hear people complaining about problems with their Infiniti here. I've owned a 2001 BMW from new, and let's just say... I know the service people WELL... so does my bank!
First of all, the theme of "I bought a $40k car, why isn't reliable?" doesn't apply here. You didn't pay $40k for reliability--you paid $40k for a high performance luxury car. If you wanted $40k worth of reliability, you would most likely sacrifice a good deal of the performance and luxury! It's just that simple--the two don't go well together.
Now, that's not to say that improvement isn't possible. I agree with the fact that the German cars DO have a great deal of interior quality superiority over these G's... but it doesn't come FREE! I paid nearly $35k for my 325i in 2001. It has 184hp and will do 0 - 60 in... maybe 8 seconds? BUT... place your hand on the radio nob, the window buttons, anywhere inside.. and you'll feel where the extra bucks were spent.
But the simple fact is, BOTH the BMW and Infiniti will have their problems. On the BMW I've replaced window regulators, blower resister motors on the air conditioning, shocks prematurely, have window creaks, etc etc. When building a car which performs to higher standards, it's necessary to take bigger risks, ask more of the components, build to tighter tollerances, etc... all of which need to be maintained at frequencies and specifications that aren't for the person looking for pure reliability. Ask any Ferrari or Lambo owner how often they're in the shop--it's surprisingly often. Should they be saying, "I paid $200k for this car, why is it EVER in the shop???" NO. Again, you paid for the fun, performance, and luxury gadgets--all of which usually need MORE (not less) attention than the generic, older, safer technologies found in your $18k family sedan.
In the advanced technology world which I work, we have a saying called "being on the bleeding edge"--you have the latest and greatest, but it comes with its fair share of pain to be there. In 10 years what you find in our G's today will be mainstream and perfected into a cheaper, much more reliable car... kind of like comparing a 10 year old Acura with a modern day Honda. Stuff rolls downhill and eventually settles. But I have a feeling, if you're buying ANY high performance luxury car, you're not looking for "safe and reliable" as your top priority.
So yeah... let's push back and ask for the best quality we can from ALL of these automakers... but with a little tact and understanding of what it is we're asking. And if you're still unhappy, it may be time to look in the mirror and say, "I might just be a Honda Accord kinda guy."

Couldn't agree with you more. Very well said. The more gadgets you have in the car and the more complex the car is, there are more things that can break. My uncle has a BMW 745 and that thing is at the dealer all the time for some electrical problems (go figure....that car has more buttons than an airplane )
