Local news did a story about something that sounds similar. Sounds real to me.
Doesn't seem too complicated if you think about it. The flatbed scanner I have has font recognition software with it, you scan a page and you can edit the text once it's on your computer. Once the gizmo scans the license plate it recognizes the letters and enters them in the data base.
Stuff like that is the reason why I never put my plates on my cars. I just keep the new car dealer plate thing on forever. I laugh as I run through those camera enforced intersections and I see the flash pop. They'll have fun trying to send me a ticket. If I get pulled over I just get a $10 fix it ticket, which I'll take over a $250 red light one anyday.

You get by without a rear plate too?? I thought those cameras could get you coming and going?

I don't put any plates on my cars, front or back. Most of my friends do the same. Or they just put the rears on and put a AMG, M, Porsche marquee plate, etc. on the front. Works most of the time.
