Ford plans big diesel push world wide
Ford plans big diesel push world wide.
Fords world-wide engine plans for their PAG affiliates for the coming decades centre around diesel units fitted with ceramic catalytic converters – not gasoline engines in a bid to create more power, better
economy and lower emissions.
Example: The forthcoming Jaguar S-Type face lift and new Discovery & Freelanders will offer 2.0-litre 4-cylinder and 2.7-litre V6 diesels from their introduction. Developed jointly with Peugeot and Citroen, the new motors will be spread across the entire Ford PAG and Peugeot/Citroen groups, though Jaguar and Land Rover (possibly AM see below) will add extra strengthening to their vehicles chassis to aid refinement, something not offered by the others.
Using state-of-the-art Compacted Graphite Iron cylinder blocks, S-Types will get a 200-bhp, 350lb/ft 2.7-litre V6 when it appears in 2004, whilst the Discovery will get a slightly de-tuned version of the same motor. The Freelander on the other hand will see the introduction of the superb 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder unit in the current X-Type. This new engine construction technology will be repeated on all engines and overcomes the problems of weight, noise, vibration etc., some believe making gasoline almost irrelevant (maybe).
More excitingly, Jaguar and Land Rover are working flat out on a new 4.0-litre V8 for their respective models. When the current deal with BMW runs out, Land Rover will have NO DIESEL ENGINE for the Range Rover, and surprisingly, in Europe at least, has been a good seller. The solution is a 250-bhp, 450lb/ft V8, which is superbly refined and very powerful - enough to endow the XJ and Range Rover with a lot of grunt. This unit will appear in 2005 when both models get their fist face-lifts.
Jaguar X-Type 2.0-Litre 4-Cylinder Diesel.
Jaguar S-Type 2.0-Litre 4-Cylinder Diesel.
Jaguar S-Type 2.7-Litre V6 Diesel.
Jaguar XJ8 4.0-Litre V8 Diesel.
LR Freelander 2.0-Litre 4-Cylinder Diesel.
LR Discovery 2.0-Litre 4-Cylinder Diesel.
LR Discovery 2.7-Litre V6 Diesel.
Range Rover 4.0-Litre V8 Diesel.
Rumours that a V8 diesel version of the baby Aston Martin 305 is being tested are quoted as "Premature", interestingly enough, not "NO" as most would expect, probably because their is supposed to be a new diesel XK8 in Coventry, England.
