the Xbox is a computer...there are soo many options with it...thats why I dont understand the rave of PS2 in the car...the Xbox can be moded to be a NAV system, DVD player, MP3 player, and anything else a computer can do...granted it is bigger but some creative installing and im sure u can make it virtually invisible
Well I won't engage you in an argument about the definition of a computer, but there is a linux kit with OS, keyboard, mouse, hard drive and network adapter available for the PS2 at: http://www.us.playstation.com/purchase.aspx?id=hardware
The PS2 hard drive has it's own file system, but it is possible to put the filesystem on any standard hard drive. Newer versions of the PS2 include a network adapter so it can now be connected through your network.
first off, i wasnt aware of that product so..nice find
but it is adding all the components needed to make it into a personal computer. my original comments were just saying the Xbox is already a personal computer with limitations put on my microsoft. the mod chip removes those limitations
the PS2 is a true console and that kit is completly propriotary. It says only the HD they supply will work and only this special version of Linux can be installed on a PS2. So, yes it would be a computer but with no options as to what O/S you run or probably even programs u want installed.
You guys are arguing semantics and it's a bit silly.
Settle the argument by just agreeing that the XBox is a console that uses off the shelf (more or less) PC components while the PS2 is a console that uses largely proprietary components.
Both are computers as the definition of that term is a bit nebulous. Calling the XBox a PC is precarious as well because MS could possibly argue that it has to run Windows to be a PC (though Apple would dispute).
In modern parliance, most people understand x86/Windows when you say PC and PPC/OSX when you say Mac (for example, though Linux complicates things).

lol...i was tryin to say that in my last post
but for the record cause i "THINK" u implied otherwise...the Xbox can run any O/S (Linux, Unix, Windows, and even an OSx)
but i agree the common theme labels (incorrectly IMO) PC for Windows and MAC, LINUX, or UNIX for all others.

I'm posting this on my 4-slice GE right now! Actually I was not arguing semantics, my point was that the PS2 could be modified to run the same apps that run on the Xbox - though admittedly with greater expense and likely more time consuming. If you're an anti-microsoft person, you could also justify the Xbox because MS loses money on every Xbox sold.

I've only seen Linux, though some variant of BSD would make sense. I've not seen anyone doing Windows installs. Got any links to that? Darwin and OSX really aren't the same thing.
I'll see if i can find the windows install...someone actually did a DUAL boot of Linux and Windows...dont ask me why but Id guess they were bored
the only reason i added OSx to my list was because I know that Windows can be installed on a Apple PC...iv never tryed the other way around but assumed it was possible.
OK found this site (wasnt same one i saw before) http://www.xbox-linux.org/
they say u can either run Linux alone or dual boot. This doesnt make since to me since if u can run an OS as a dual boot then u can run it alone too. This site is for the linux so maybe they didnt mean to imply u can't run another OS alone.
They also say NO MODDING is needed to install linux...thats kinda cool too
The Xbox is a legacy-free PC by Microsoft:
• Intel Celeron 733 MHz CPU
• nVidia GeForce 3MX
• 64 MB of RAM
• 8/10 GB hard disk
• DVD drive
• 10/100 Ethernet

Windows can be EMULATED and run within OSX on a Mac. It doesn't run natively on the PPC processor Macs use. Similarly, OSX won't run natively on x86 processors, though the open sourced Unix core under OSX (Darwin) can be ported.
