How to add line level inputs to any stock radio
I haven't done this to my factory radio in my G yet, but it did work fine in my previous Pontiac with a factory Monsoon system. This should work with just about any factory radio with an FM tuner. This will require some electronics knowledge.
The steps below are a little involved and shouldn't be done by someone who doesn't feel comfortable working at the component level with electronics.
The basic idea is to use the internal line inputs to the radio circuitry from the internal FM tuner module that is part of the main board. Most car radios today use a self contained tuner component that is soldered to the main board. They are usually small metal boxes soldered to the main board inside the radio. Once the left and right line outputs of the tuner module are found (lookup the part number on the Internet for the pinouts), you simply add a relay to switch the main board's inputs between the FM tuner and a line in cable that you have hanging out the back of the radio. You also have a single wire that hangs out the back from the coil on the relay. Hooking this wire up to an external switch inline with a 12V source will allow you to select the external line input. When the switch is off, the relay defaults to the FM tuner input. So to use this new line input, you would select the FM radio and put it on any station, then flip the switch and you'll hear whatever source you have hooked to the new external inputs.
The quality of the signal is the same as if the radio had factory line inputs. All the FM signal quality loss is in that FM tuner module that your bypassing.
As soon as I do it to my Bose system, I'll post a site with detailed pics and instructions. Any step by step instructions I post tonight would be based off my own memory from doing this with my previous car 4 years ago.
