Default How to add line level inputs to any stock radio

I haven't done this to my factory radio in my G yet, but it did work fine in my previous Pontiac with a factory Monsoon system. This should work with just about any factory radio with an FM tuner. This will require some electronics knowledge.

The steps below are a little involved and shouldn't be done by someone who doesn't feel comfortable working at the component level with electronics.

The basic idea is to use the internal line inputs to the radio circuitry from the internal FM tuner module that is part of the main board. Most car radios today use a self contained tuner component that is soldered to the main board. They are usually small metal boxes soldered to the main board inside the radio. Once the left and right line outputs of the tuner module are found (lookup the part number on the Internet for the pinouts), you simply add a relay to switch the main board's inputs between the FM tuner and a line in cable that you have hanging out the back of the radio. You also have a single wire that hangs out the back from the coil on the relay. Hooking this wire up to an external switch inline with a 12V source will allow you to select the external line input. When the switch is off, the relay defaults to the FM tuner input. So to use this new line input, you would select the FM radio and put it on any station, then flip the switch and you'll hear whatever source you have hooked to the new external inputs.

The quality of the signal is the same as if the radio had factory line inputs. All the FM signal quality loss is in that FM tuner module that your bypassing.

As soon as I do it to my Bose system, I'll post a site with detailed pics and instructions. Any step by step instructions I post tonight would be based off my own memory from doing this with my previous car 4 years ago.

Do you get any crackle when the relay switches?

You know what I drive. Pictures.

Nope. No crackle. It would be a good idea to use a higher quality relay though. www.digikey.com has some that would be of better quality than what you would find at Radio Shack. Quality is kinda hard to determine though. You won't find reviews on relays in Consumer Reports. []

I probably won't ever do this mod because I don't need line in, but it does sound very cool. I'd love to see pics of a clean install, maybe something like kloh's ipod install except hard-wired.

I have been waiting for Blitzsafe and/or Pacific Audio to come out with their AUX kits FOR MONTHS now. Too bad your solution isn't simple enough for an idiot like me to do. I can't stand my FM transmission any longer!!!

I'm thinking about offering it as a service. You ship me your radio and I'll make the mods and ship it back. Still working on the details though. I also thought about taking my radio apart to see if I could design my own a Blitzsafe style adapter. I have the factory XM receiver installed so it should be easier for me to analyze what signals are going where. The only problem though and a good reason that Blitzsafe hasn't released theirs yet could be in the type of connection. I talked to the techs at the dealer while they were installing the XM module and they said everything in the car including the XM communicate via a USB interface. That's much more difficult to adapt than simply tracing wires.

Post details after you try it on yours and you might have a customer waiting in the wings. That is, if one of those other companies don't beat you to the punch
