Searched around forums, but I was still not clear on:
A) What my options are, what I have to buy (and what each part does...I have no idea what "double DIN" means...wtf is DIN?) - does it come with a new dvd reader? or you keep the stock one? how do you control the play (is there a remote or something?)
B) Can I install it on my own (given that I dont know much about it) or is it best left to a pro?
If this is a total re-post of this question, please point me to the appropriate thread.
double din is basically a double din headunit, almost 4 times as big as the single din units, that functions as the source unit. it MUST be dvd compatible and have AUX input to play DVD's. this will cost around 1500 for something descent. good thing is you wont need a DVD player and it will also have navigation. if u have stock nav, u can mod that to play dvds, you will need to purchase a DVD player.
b. install is hard, you have to position the GPS Antenna properly and splice into the cars stock wiring harness and then some. i dont reccomend doing it on your own unless u have experience with this type of thing
To even install the double din conversion, you are looking at almost $400 dollars for the parts. Then you factor in cost of radio, amps subs, etc. It is a big decision.
I don't want to go too high end (Id like to know whats out there though) but I was wondering what are the basic things I need in order to have my navi still work, but also be able to pop in a movie DVD in the slot and watch it
well if u got stock navi, it costs u 500 tops. just grap a DVD player for car audio and do the hack, that is if u have stock navi.
Ok, so I have the stock navi...but what do you mean grab a DVD for "car audio" - can you send me a link to an example product? And where are some instructions for this "hack" you speak of ?
Where do you actually put the DVD player? That is what I am confused about, I thought you could put the DVD in the same slot as the Navi DVD no?
thanks for you help so far.
oh and I have an 04 coupe....typo in the title of the thread....dont know if that matters....prob not,
the DVD formatted for Navi is different then the DVD format for video.
what i mean by "car audio" DVD playter is a DVD player not meant for your home. it runs on 12 volt.
you can use "home" DVD players, but u need to get an invertor and such, and that turns out to be a pain in the ass.
you can mount the DVD player in the trunk or under a seat. if u change movies a lot, i reccomend somewhere in the cabin itself.
Ok cool. Im starting to get it. Now how does the external reader (mounted under my seat lets say) hook into the Navi screen? Does all that come as a package with the DVD movie reader? Can I hook it up easily? What site can I order from?
1. Buy an external "Switcher". because the factory Navi Screen is designed to only utilize their source (DVD-ROM FOR NAVI CD), you need to be able to switch and go back and forth through the new dvd player and the old dvd rom drive. The thing i reccomend here is an AV Switcher. Basically, it has 3 inputs and outputs, you in addition to running the new dvd player, you can run a video game system or any other option you want. This is the best thing to do and allows for expansion in the future.
2. sound. if you buy the above AV Video switcher, the sound will be through their internal FM Modulator. THis means that in order to listen to the DVD, you need to turn the radio on the frequency coinciding with this. THis quality is only descent however, if you want something a little more vivid and dynamic there is another option we can discuss.
3. dvd player. obviously you need this. a descent one costs a few hundred bucks. i would reccomend using SAVV because they are very good, and the picture quality is amazing for car video.
let me know what you want to do for option number2, and then i can help more
i HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend savv. ill post reccomendations when i get home and u can take a look later.
if u want enhanaced sound, as in non FM modulated, i reccomend doing it right away because if u wait, ull need to take everything out again and redo all wiring. makes it easier if its the route you wanna go buy doing it the first time
