just to elaborate, it is commonly thought that there is no speed limit on the autobahn. in fact, portions do have speed limits, and other portions do not. you CAN and will get pulled over and cited for wreckless driving. it is not a free for all. those who drive on the autobahn understand the rules of the road and only use the #1 lane for passing (generally). it has been proven that driving over the speed limit causes less accidents than driving under it.
the autobahn in general is much higher quality that pretty much any road we have over here. it is 2 feet thick and thus less cracks, potholes etc. and when the road is damaged, they repair it much quicker.
