i think mobil 1 has an oil filter that lasts 10K...i don't know if i would want to test it to that extend regardless of their reccomendation.

I would think it's not so much engine durability as it is about the filter. You can run an engine on some filthy oil, but if you can't trap the particles or if the particles that are trapped slow down the oil flow then you've got some serious issues.
