Gard, while God is described as being a loving and caring being; he is also described as vengeful. And if you read the old testament in particular you'll notice a lot of bloody and violent attacks by the Israelites (and those whose offspring would become the Israelites) carried out under the direction of God.
And most non-extremist christians don't believe in hating gays; but not condoning the practice.
