It's interesting how a couple of streets (or a 1/4 mile) can make a difference. Take for example Pasadena. North of the 210 it is a cesspool full of drugs and crime. I remember a friend who had a house there (he thought the neighborhood would 'turn' and become more affluent) I spent New Year's eve there one time and right outside there were people shooting guns into the air. Meanwhile, just South of the 210 is one of the most affluent areas in the LA metro area. Multi-million dollar mansions.

Skid row is definitely bad as are South Central, certain areas of North Hollywood, East LA, etc.

I hear stories about my extended family's time in the Phillippines where in some areas people will cut off your finger to get your rings.

The So. side of Chicago is also a place I wouldn't linger.
